Woodcocks: a history

Woodcocks is thought to be the oldest firm of solicitors in England in which the founding family has been involved right through its history. That means we have been practising law for more than 200 years - and we're very proud of our fine traditions.

The current organisation is an amalgam of two firms, both founded by the Woodcock family. Samuel Woodcock (1764 - 1843) began practising in Bury in 1791 after an apprenticeship in Preston. The business continued under his direct descendants as Samuel Woodcock & Sons (now Woodcocks) until 1944. Samuel's nephew, James (1798 - 1835) began to practise as a solicitor in Haslingden in 1821 and that firm later became known as Woodcock and Sons (now Woodcocks).

But you'll find no quill pens and ledgers here! Today's modern and forward looking Woodcocks may be based on centuries of legal practice, but it is also well and truly up there with the contemporary systems and methods that you would expect from a successful and widely respected local firm. You only have to ask our clients: many of them have been with us for years - and that says a lot about the way we look after people.

Welcome to Woodcocks.
